BOOK#1 in the Pigeon-toed Horse Mysteries
In the fall of 1868, the cannons are silent. The Black Hawk War is over, and a year of fighting renegade Utes through the mountains of central Utah has left Collin Mitchell scarred and unemployed. Now, the Utes want peace, and Brigham Young is ready to bring them into the fold. But Salt Lake City has changed. The transcontinental railroad is nearly completed; women are beginning the fight for enfranchisement; territorial marshals are hunting and jailing Mormon polygamists; plagues of locusts swarm the Salt Lake valley, and Mitchell is out of a job. Brother Brigham, however, has just the project, and Mitchell soon discovers there is no peace for an unemployed, reformed gunman.

The complicated character of ex-gunman Collin Mitchell is one of the greatest strengths of Fleming’s tale set in territorial Utah. When Brother Bingham sends Mitchell to Ogden to investigate the disappearance six years earlier of a woman that the local law officials don’t seem to have taken seriously, he finds more than anyone could have bargained for. Mitchell is a family man, married to two women, who dislikes violence but also doesn’t hesitate to shoot to kill when he or his family is threatened. Haunted by his past, he walks with the Angel of Death, an old man he only half believes. There is richness in the tale and in the people that Fleming has created that makes the reading satisfying. It is told with humor as well as sadness.

TRACKS OF A PIGEONTOED HORSE edition by J T FLEMING Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
J.T. Fleming writes a good story. Unique in its combination of western history from a still little known but vast area called the Utah Territory, and a culture known then as the "Mormons," there is much to learn about this people and these times. This was a wild west still not fully explored on the written page, and few western writers have the background and ability to do this. Fleming writes his characters off the page and into your heart. They also grow on you with each book as you learn more and more about Sheriff Collin Mitchell and his two wives, who are actually sisters, Sarah and Susan. One sister is a true westerner who knows how to tote a gun and make split second decisions. The other wife is a great detective and crime investigator, both raise their children, love their man, and help out in anyway they can to solve the latest crime case that the sheriff is working on.
With just a touch of mysticism, great descriptions of these lands and the people on them, Fleming combines all this to create one very good story after another. Anyone who loves westerns will really appreciate these books, and it is refreshing to have the women characters just as interesting as the men are. In describing many of his characters, Fleming's one-liners are great! One bad man is described as "mean clear through, that one. Conscience like a chunk of rawhide boiled and dried hard as a rock." In another instance he describes his horse drinking water as "a lake small, cold and crystal clear when Mitchell halted the grulla and let the animal slake its thirst from a thin stream of water trickling down the northern face of the mountain." Or in describing an weapon's path he says "The obsidian blade sped through the air like a black bullet, shattering against the rock face of the cavern wall."
Western fans will love this true balance of dialogue, descriptive prose and action. The historical information is skillfully woven into these stories filled with humor, sudden fast paced action scenes and a clear love of nature and the out-of-doors. I highly recommend these books and the future ones yet to be written.
I bought this on a chance. One of those pick it out as you look. It pulled me in and kept me up late into the night reading. Kept the suspense until the end. A great mystery in the main plot and a secondary plot that had me buying his second book before I finished the first!
Though I enjoyed the description in this book as well as the history I struggled following the story. The transitions were a bit rough and the sudden changes in scenes and characters made for a bit of a choppy read.
